We did it!

Day 8…we did it

On our eighth day of our charity challenge, it was an early start at 5.45am to make our final trek from Lebouce to Base Camp Everest. After hiking for 8 – 10 hours a day for the past week, we were determined to reach our final destination.

The trail from Lebouce to the base camp was very challenging, with steep ascents and rocky terrain, but the weather was fairly kind to us. We were surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, and the sheer size and power of these mountains kept us inspired.

The altitude made the hike very tiring, but we were motivated by the reason we embarked on this challenge, to raise funds Type-1 diabetes research charity, JDRF. We were walking not only for ourselves but also for a greater cause.

Finally, after about 6 hours of hiking, we arrived at the base camp of Mount Everest. It was a moment of triumph and pride, as we had accomplished our mission of trekking up the highest mountain in the world. We took a moment to reflect on the journey and the cause that brought us here, and we were filled with a sense of gratitude and purpose.

After celebrating our achievement and taking some time to soak in the experience, we had to descend some way, however the weather turned and we left with heavy snow starting at Base Camp, making the final part of our journey even more challenging.

Reflecting on the journey, we’ve met many local people who embraced us, and fellow hikers taking the same journey as us, but with their own individual challenges to overcome. A special mention should go to our incredible guides, Bhanu and Shanu, who’ve supported us the whole way. Thank you!

This experience has been both physically and mentally challenging, with the high altitudes taking a toll on our bodies, and sapping our energy. As always, Graeme and I have supported and pushed each other to achieve our goals, though it was never in doubt that we’d reach our destination.

We’ve been proud to support JDRF this week and it has been great to see many of our friends, family and colleagues have joined us in making donations to this great charity.

For now, it’s time for a rest, before we go again on our next adventure.

Leanne and Graeme are raising funds for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) to support their efforts to find a cure for Type-1 Diabetes. In a bid to raise as much money for the charity as possible, Graeme and Leanne have launched a JustGiving page which can be found here: justgiving.com/page/graeme-and-leanne-carling-1681063124419
